THOUGHTS ON THE SEASON SO FAR

Daniel Buhagiar - Vice President  |  16th December 2015

This season we have managed to build team spirit creating confidence in each other and the ability to read play to form a more pro active team which will produce good offensive and defensive play. The future is bright when you compare last years performance which resulted in achieving a poor position in the league.  The team has shown great strength, a desire to win and are not afraid of playing anyone in our league. Our team is growing and maturing at a steady pace and more importantly improving in all aspects of the game. The coaching team has helped tremendously and have helped to build the team to an efficient unit.  We have shown encouragement and determination and have  gained the respect of all other teams including the league champions.

We are currently in third place, we have never been in this position before. It's still too early to know what this season will bring.  I am confident that we are on the right track and if we continue to work hard, show commitment and determination this will be our best season ever, since our club (Lions Gibraltar FC) was founded in 1966.

We started the season with an impressive pre-season accompanied  with new coaches and some new signings that has had an enormous impact on our club and has tremendously improved our squad.

The idea of retaining last season's core players combined with our youth policy  has produced the desired result, of improving and progressing the team.

The pre-season  training was unfortunately not held in Gibraltar due to the lack of local training facilities.  Fortunately we were able to carry out our pre - season training in Spain and combined with intensive football schedules, incorporating fitness and arranging friendly matches enabled the team to work as a unit both offensively and defensively has been this season's key turning point.

We are competing in all leagues and I believe that we stand a very good chance wherever we compete. There is much to do still we must learn from our mistakes and improve in the defensive and attacking third.

I don't like naming players who perform  and create individual chances which are also important to any football team, but I prefer to look at the team collectively as a force to be reckon with. The attitude, composure, of our team definitely providing results and this is the difference  between  having players playing football and having a team of players. Not only the first eleven but the squad as a whole who when asked to perform will protect and help  each other to become an efficient force.  I am extremely proud of all our Lion's players, coaches, helpers and  everyone who contributes positively to this  club, in all disciplines, categories, and gender and more so our future players  of tomorrow our young, junior players.

I am thrilled with regard to the ladies football team our performances are also increasing every year. Their commitment, drive and determination towards the club is second to none.  Our  Head Coach Adrian Parral has bonded the team very well and I am sure that they will succeed and achieve their goal at the end of the season, with a double header league  and cup winners.

Our junior policy and scheme has also improved during the past  months, with new teams, coaches and players combined with a very ambitious plan that will no doubt keep us in good stead and produce the players of tomorrow.  The club's Head coach Juanlu is working with all coaches to try  and instill  a club system and a football philosophy in all our teams senior and junior alike.

I would like to take this opportunity in thanking all our players, coaches and committee for spending invaluable hours of their spare time to help Lions FC grassroots to establish a strong link between them and look forward to achieve the desired results. Embrace the future because it is bright.

On behalf of the committee and myself I would like to wish the members, players, supporters, club sympathisers a Merry Christmas and a Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
